Between July 2007 and May 2008, I served as the interim Chief Executive Officer of Barnert Memorial Hospital. This was a turbulent time as the organization went through a financial turnaround, bankruptcy, reductions in force, sale negotiations, etc. During this time I had the privilege of working closely with the Board of Directors, the Vice Chairman of which was Stephen Verp.
The true test of one’s ability comes during times of stress. Steve’s leadership came through strongly during weekly Turnaround Committee and monthly Board meetings. There were many difficult decisions to be made and Steve’s legal, financial and real estate background provided him with a unique platform from which he could draw and contribute. Steve has also been the Chief Executive of a $45 million enterprise, an experience few can claim. This meant he understood the complexities of operating a large business and as we worked together to negotiate a sales agreement his legal, real estate, financial acumen and major transaction experience combined into a real strength. His advice and counsel was well respected by the Board, Medical Staff and Management Team.
Steve is much more than just a businessman. His devotion to the hospital, when he could have just walked away, and the community says a great deal about him and his character.
Steve is an excellent communicator who could articulate complex matters in terms all could comprehend.
I also found Steve to be a man of his word. If he says he is going to do something, it would be done and done well.
I recommend Steve for any position or relationship for which his rich and varied background qualifies him. What is particularly important in any incumbent or relationship is credibility, dependability, competence, honesty and a true regard one for another. Steve brings these qualities in abundance and when combined with his legal and business background he is a formidable asset. I would not hesitate to enter into a business relationship with Steve based solely on his word and a handshake.
